Black & Decker GH1000 Review by Ole
So far so good. I have my fingers crossed after reading the reviews & because of my previous experience with this model.
On July 1, 2008 I received my first Grass Hog 1000 & it worked GREAT the first season with NO breakdowns. (It was not the recalled model) Unfortunately, starting the 2nd season, the trimmer would break down each & every month. The line would start spitting out fast & FURIOUS & even with long pants on, I still ended up with bleeding cuts on my legs from being whipped by the string & let me tell you, it really STUNG! The automatic feed consists of 2 parts, a lever & a spool. So if this happens to you, the trimmer either needs the 99 cent lever (shipping $9.95) or a new spool. Yes, the plastic spool wears also - so save yourself the frustration & go ahead & order a couple spools right away cause you will to need them. You can`t purchase the spool w/o the line & the replacement spool is VERY overpriced because it ONLY has 12 feet of line on each side. It`s very simple & inexpensive to wind your own line on the spool & compared to all the other trimmers I've owned, it's one of the easiest to do; but remember, you will need to purchase a new spool from time to time.
The warranty is 2 years & B&D was pretty good about ALWAYS providing free replacement parts even though both the lever & the spool are both considered consumable parts. However; they ALWAYS sent the lever first because it was cheaper & then it would turn out to be a worn spool. Consequently, I was ALWAYS waiting for parts because they would never send both the lever & the spool at the same time. At the beginning of the 4th season, the motor blew - right after I installed a new lever & then a spool to fix the automatic feed problem once again! (Also, I haven't seen ANY other trimmers which have a 2 year warranty other than B&D)
I'm sure you are wondering "why" I would ever purchase another one. Well, the Weight & the Power of the trimmer is "why". The Grass Hog 1000 is nearly half the weight of the average gas trimmer & it is every bit as powerful if not more so than any gas trimmer I've ever owned & I've owned many different brands of gas trimmers over the years. I have lots of trimming to do & I used my first Grass Hog 1000 for a FULL day once each month plus a few hours in between full trims for 2 full seasons. I'm getting older & due to an injury, I just cannot handle a heavy gas trimmer any longer. Also, if you ever owned a gas trimmer, you know how temperamental they can be & they also break down quite often. It's a relief not having to fight with a gas trimmer or put up with gas & oil fumes any more. Yes, the trimmer only lasted 3 seasons; but in 2008, it was only $49 & it had a 2 yr warranty. It was definitely worth $20 a season for what it saved me in pain & wear & tear to my back, wrists, elbows & shoulders, even with all the problems with the automatic feed.
I also checked out the Stihl electric trimmers . The Stihl weighs several pounds more & is not as powerful;, in addition to being twice the price - so if you need the power of a gas trimmer & weight is a consideration due to an aging or injured body, the B&D Grass Hog 1000 is the better deal, even with the automatic feed problems. I would have preferred a straight shaft; but that model was not as powerful & I've been told a curved shaft is better balanced - easier on the body. I'm a female & I have NO trouble handling this trimmer.
I was disappointed when I received a 2009 model instead of 2011; but it has the same 2 year warranty. I've only used this trimmer about 20 hours & will update my review as time goes by. I'm giving it 5 stars because so far this trimmer is working great. The previous trimmer would have only received 2 1/2 stars because it only worked one short season before having problems every time I used it. Compared to the 2008 model I owned, this trimmer does not seem to have as much power; but it also did not use as much string & thats a very good thing. Time will tell...
EDIT --- The date code can be found on the 1st page of the instruction book. I ordered trimmer from Amazon & order was fulfilled by Buckeye Supply. Shipping was fast - shipped out the next day & received much sooner than expected.
Also check out the B&D website - they have a new recall - some of the GH's with orange spool caps have been recalled due to a possible "laceration" problem. Only black cap models were in the previous recalls.

Black & Decker GH1000 Review by Jae
This was unfortunately bought for me to replace my trusty older Grasshog (that worked like a charm), and after having to use it roughly three times. Just thought I'd reiterate whats already been said here.
-Automatic Feeder. Doesn't work. Plain and simple. You'll spend more time re-spooling the line then actually trimming your yard.
-Powerful, almost too powerful. Makes it hard to do any real edging with it, and it's damn near impossible to control at high speeds.
-Like having cuts on your legs? Then this is the product for YOU!
On the plus side, my motor hasn't died yet!
Avoid like the plague.
Black & Decker GH1000 Review by profdejour
The GH1000 appeared to be the best bargain in the search. A $170 trimer for $69 plus shipping. Upon receiving the product and the minor assembly required, it was plugged in and ready to go. For almost two minutes it worked perfectly...then nothing.
The GH1000 was exchanged through Amazon.com and the second one arrived within a week. This one wouldn't even start. I checked the cord by plugging in another tool, and the second tool worked fine. So, the GH1000 was returned for a refund. But that's not the end of the review.
Still needing a trimmer, I rechecked the retail stores and their web sites for prices. Four different stores had the same product, same price ($69) and no shipping. Guess which one I didn't purchase.
